Bring out the best of July
______________________________

WB00955_.GIF (255 bytes) Deep colours are invaluable in the summer border to set off the lighter tones, and Penstemon 'Burgundy' is one of the best. It is lovely with pink, blue or white flowers, its deep wine colour bringing richness and solidity to a composition.
WB00955_.GIF (255 bytes) The Californian poppy brings a touch of the sunny climate of its native land. It loves a dry sunny soil, where it will flower for months in shades of hot orange, red and yellow. It self-sows easily, starting new plants in interesting places.
WB00955_.GIF (255 bytes) The peach-leaved bell flower not only has a pretty name but it is one of the prettiest plants of the summer. The bells of Campanula persicifolia are carried on graceful slender stems that rise above a small tuft of narrow, peach-like leaves. It is easy to grow in a sunny position in ordinary soil.
WB00955_.GIF (255 bytes) Summer is a time of lightness and there is no better example than the frothy heads of the pink meadowsweet, Filipendula palmata 'Rubra', a easy plant to grow in soil that does not dry out. Its foliage is good too.
